The Bezel: The Stone Wrapped in Metal, Modern and Secure
Why wrapping the whole stone in metal is the most protective setting we make, full vs. half bezel, and who it genuinely suits.

The diamond fully wrapped in a rim of metal, no prongs at all. The setting we recommend most often to clients whose hands genuinely do not stop moving.
- Most protective setting we make, nothing raised to catch or loosen over years of wear.
- Full or half bezel: a full rim of metal, or metal only where the stone actually needs support.
- A deliberate trade: slightly less brilliance than a pronged setting, for real everyday security.
- Lower profile, sits flush and catches less on clothing, hair and gloves.
Why it protects, mechanically
A pronged setting holds a stone with a handful of raised metal points, each one a place that can loosen, catch, or bend over years of daily wear. A bezel replaces every one of those points with a single continuous rim of metal, wrapping the stone’s girdle entirely. There is no single point of failure, and nothing proud of the ring’s surface to snag on a glove, a sweater, or a car door.
The trade-off is real and worth naming honestly: metal touching more of the stone’s surface blocks slightly more light from entering and escaping at the sides, so a bezel-set diamond reads marginally less brilliant than the same stone in an open prong setting. For a client prioritizing security and a modern, minimal look over maximum sparkle, that trade is the entire point.
Full bezel or half bezel
Metal wraps the stone’s entire circumference. Maximum protection, the most secure setting we offer, at the cost of slightly more coverage over the stone’s profile.
Metal covers only two opposing sides, leaving the rest of the girdle open to light. A middle ground between full-bezel security and prong-set brilliance.
The bezel rim cast in a contrasting metal to the band, a quiet, modern detail that reads differently depending on the angle of light.
Built for the hand that never stops moving.
Who chooses a bezel, and when
This is consistently the choice of clients with genuinely active hands, medical professionals, anyone working with their hands daily, frequent gym-goers, and parents of young children. It is also chosen independent of lifestyle by clients who simply prefer the cleaner, more architectural, more modern look a bezel gives compared to visible prongs.
Styling it well
A bezel’s low, flush profile pairs easily with a plain or gently curved band, and is one of the few settings genuinely comfortable to wear alongside manual work or frequent glove use without a second thought.
Bezel or prong-set, how to decide
Choose a bezel if security and a lower profile matter more to you than maximum brilliance, or if your hands are genuinely active daily. Choose a classic pronged solitaire if you want the most light possible moving through the stone and are comfortable with the slightly higher, more exposed profile that comes with it.
Living with a bezel
This is the lowest-maintenance setting we make. With no prongs to check or tighten, a bezel rarely needs anything beyond a normal cleaning, though we still recommend having the rim itself inspected occasionally for wear at the very thin metal edge over many years of contact.
